More Choices to Pay Bridge Tolls

Beginning January 1, 2021, all Bay Area toll bridges have switched to automatic toll collection. Following the suspension of cash toll collection in March 2020, drivers who did not pay their tolls with FasTrak received individual toll notices for each crossing. Those drivers will now receive a monthly invoice and payment is required within 21 days.

  • Customers who do not pay by the invoice due date will receive a "Notice of Toll Evasion" with a $25 penalty for each toll crossing.
  • Customers who do not return invoices with payment after 60 days will receive a "Second Notice of Delinquent Toll Evasion" with a violation penalty of $70 per crossing.
  • Customers who do not return payment after a second notice may have a hold put on their vehicle registration by the DMV and/or have the amount owed referred to a collection agency.

Drivers can choose a more convenient way to pay bridge tolls by opening a FasTrak account, License Plate account, or make a One-Time payment:

FasTrak
FasTrak automatically deducts tolls from a prepaid account using a toll tag attached to your vehicle. You can add more money to your account automatically with a credit card (the easiest way to ensure your FasTrak account always has funds) or with cash, check, or money order. There are no fees to open a FasTrak account, get a toll tag, or use it to pay your tolls.*

Paying with FasTrak is the only way to receive discounted tolls for carpools, motorcycles, and eligible clean air vehicles, as well as the lowest toll rate on the Golden Gate Bridge.

License Plate Account
License Plate Accounts are an option for drivers who choose to "pay as they go." A License Plate Account uses your license plate number to identify your vehicle and matches it to your account. If the account is linked to a credit card, the toll is charged to the card each time your vehicle crosses a bridge. There is no prepaid balance required and there are no extra fees.

If the account is opened using cash*, check, or money order, you must have a prepaid toll balance and the toll is deducted from the balance each time your vehicle crosses a bridge. There are no extra fees.

One-Time Payment
If you're visiting or only in the area for a short time, a One-Time Payment may be best for you. One-Time Payments are set up for a short, specific period of time and can be used to pay a toll after you cross a bridge (within 48 hours) or for future tolls (up to 30 days). There are no extra fees for One-Time Payments.

Your license plate number will be used to link your vehicle to your payment. A One-Time Payment can be made online with a credit card or by cash, check or money order at Cash Payment Locations*.
